Former Pittsburgh Pirate Kevin Young Set to be Honorary Chair for Life’sWork 33rd Annual Golf Invitational and UPMC Health Plan Returning as Presenting Sponsor

Pittsburgh, Pa. — Life’sWork of Western PA announced today that former Pittsburgh Pirate, Kevin Young will serve as the Honorary Chair to celebrate their 33rd Annual Golf Invitational, set for Monday, June 17th at South Hills Country Club. Every year, the organization organizes this event to engage the community in supporting the mission, vision, and core values of the organization while enjoying a scramble-style tournament.

Kevin Young played 12 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1992–95, 1997–2003) and Kansas City Royals (1996), primarily as a first baseman. He batted and threw right-handed. Young finished his career with 65 home runs hit at Three Rivers Stadium, which ranks fourth on the all-time list behind Willie Stargell (147), Barry Bonds (89) and Dave Parker (88).  And, only Stargell (184) hit more home runs as a first baseman than Young did (128) in a Pirates uniform. In addition, Young is one of only three players in franchise history to collect at least 100 runs, 40 doubles, 20 home runs, 100 RBI and 20 stolen bases in one season.  Young delivered this for Pittsburgh in 1999. (Dave Parker and Jason Bay)

Kevin Young was also the recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award in Pittsburgh. This award is given annually to the MLB player who best exemplifies sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual’s contribution to his team.

The 33rd Annual Golf Invitational will begin at 8:30 AM with registration and complimentary breakfast. The shotgun start will begin at 10:00 AM. Life’sWork is very grateful to UPMC Health Plan for returning as the Presenting Sponsor again this year!

Tournament activities will kick off the day with live leaderboard scoring, auctions, raffles, awards, variety of concourse prizes, and many other great opportunities. Lunch and snacks, and beverages will also be provided throughout the day followed by a banquet award dinner.

One auction item taking the spotlight includes a chance to win a Stay and Play Package with Dormie Network, the nation’s most exclusive collection of destination golf clubs. This package is valued at $3,400 and includes accommodations for up to four people for one night and two days of unlimited golf.

Guests who make a qualified donation at a Par 5 hole will also be given a chance to win a $5,000 trip to Pebble Beach for two people. Professional Long Driver Kyle Blakely will attempt to hole out his second shot, and if achieved, he will win the trip for the contributor. We will also have a few other on-course games for golfers to participate in and raise funds for Life’sWork of Western PA.

Kevin Young, former Pittsburgh Pirate, and this year’s Honorary Chair for the event will be attending and offering foursome photo opportunities for the golfers during the invitational on a very special hole as well.

All proceeds raised during this event will go toward funding the Life’sWork of Western PA Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Recover Employment Support Program.  For more information, participation, or sponsorship please contact Chief Development Officer, Babs Sefiane at  (412) 471-2600 ext. 261 or at bsefiane@lifesworkwpa.org
